BACKFLOW PREVENTION, INSTALLATION & SERVICING
WA Law now requires Backflow Prevention devices to be installed on all properties on the boundary of every water service connection to a property (including Fire Services). This is a mandatory Requirement enforced by Water Corporation on all Commercial and Multi residential properties.

What is Backflow?
Backflow is the reversal of normal direction of water flow in a water supplying system. Backflow occurs when the water delivery main is at a lower pressure than the internal plumbing system. This system is called back siphonage and commonly occurs when there is a burst or ruptured water main or when there is a sudden demand of water i.e. :(Fire Fighting suction) which causes the water to move in a forward position and dragging water from a low pressure zone into the high demand location.
By installing backflow prevention valves it prevents the back siphoning of contaminated water into our potable water supply, this valve acts as a one way valve and when the water tries to go back into the supply line it closes and eliminates any contamination. This prevents all harmful and unwanted contamination such as: chemicals, acids, fertilizers etc. into our drinking water.
How often do I test my backflow device?
Once these backflow prevention valves are installed it is compulsory that the licensed plumber commissions them and registers these valves with the Water Corporation.
Every 12 months, the Water Corporation will send out to you the paperwork and test sheets for the backflow prevention valves that are required to be tested. It is mandatory they are tested regularly to ensure they are in correct operation to protect the water supply from any unwanted contamination. The licenced plumber will conduct a series of tests that are documented and submitted to the Water Corporation showing the results. You will also receive a copy of these results for your records.
Due to the potential harm to society that cross contamination can impose on our precious water supply, the Water Corporation can serve notice to business owners or property owners to install a backflow valve on the boundary or demand a valve to be commissioned at any time.
Penalties of up to $5,000 or $500 per day can be imposed for people that don’t comply.
The Water Corporation can even disconnect water services to protect the drinking water supply if they see fit.
